Forty-two fuel test assemblies were loaded into South Ukraine nuclear power plant. Under the Ukraine Nuclear Fuel Qualification Programme, which began 10 years ago, the US government supports testing necessary for Westinghouse to provide nuclear fuel for Soviet-designed VVRE-1000 reactors operating in Ukraine.
The US Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy said its officials were in Ukraine on 8 April 2010 to take part in a ceremony to mark the fuel loading at the plant, which has three 950-megawatt units.
US assistant secretary for nuclear energy Warren Miller said the fuel loading in Ukraine allows for further cooperation between the US and Ukraine in civil nuclear energy.
In addition to fuel fabrication, US cooperation with Ukraine has included the transfer of US technology to the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT) in northeastern Ukraine to help Ukraine establish a more competitive nuclear design and licensing process based on international practices.
KIPT was founded in 1928 to carry out research in nuclear physics and solid-state physics.
