Westinghouse Awarded José Cabrera Dismantling Contract

29 Jul (NucNet): A contract to dismantle the reactor vessel internals at Spain’s José Cabrera nuclear power plant has been awarded to Westinghouse Electric.

Westinghouse said yesterday that the contract for work at the single-unit plant, also known as Zorita, includes the loading of primary and secondary waste. Activated material will be loaded into multi-purpose canisters, and low- and intermediate-level waste into dedicated containers.

Westinghouse is the lead contractor and the project is expected to take 31 months to complete.

The 142-megawatt José Cabrera, Spain’s oldest nuclear unit, was permanently shut down in 2006. It was connected to the grid in 1968 and began commercial operation in 1969.

A Westinghouse pressurised water reactor, José Cabrera was one of Europe’s first nuclear power plant projects.
